Rebecca Bateson is an Acting Director in the Devices Emerging Technology and Diagnostics Section, currently serving as the project lead responsible for the introduction of the suite of reforms known as the personalised medical devices framework. Rebecca has a background in Law and a Master’s in Public Administration. She has been with the TGA for 12 years, where her work has included managing the Medical Devices Information Unit and the Devices Secretariat.
Rebecca is passionate about the development of strategic solutions and resources for both internal and external stakeholders to improve day-to-day business at the TGA. She has utilised her skills to draft legislative instruments, develop associated guidance to make regulatory requirements understandable and accessible for stakeholders, and worked with staff within the TGA to develop sound structures to streamline processes and improve service delivery. In 2016, Rebecca’s commitment to stakeholder engagement was recognised with the Department of Health’s Australia Day Award for Service.
Rebecca’s team includes staff with backgrounds in biomechanical engineering and allied health. Together the personalised medical devices team are working to contact over 10,000 individually impacted stakeholders to bring the regulatory requirements of the personalised medical devices framework to their attention and assist them with achieving compliance with their obligations. The team are also members of the International Medical Device Regulator’s Forum’s Personalized Medical Devices Working group, developing guidance that can be used to harmonise the requirements for personalised medical devices with jurisdictions around the world.

Special Needs Dentistry: to treat or not to treat
There is a geographically and technically skewed workforce of specialists in Special Needs Dentistry (SND) in Australia with a high concentration of them centred in major cities. We need general dental professionals willing to manage the oral health of patients with special needs, use every opportunity to regularly assess their caries and periodontal risk, and provide adequate preventive measures and dental treatment.
General dental practitioners should be aware of the increasing complexities that patients with special needs will incur with time. Given the anticipated downward trajectory of these patients, oral health interventions need to be appropriate to the stage of their disease. Good communication is also fundamental to good clinical practice. Therefore, dentists need to have knowledge of the available strategies to communicate effectively with these patients. It is therefore important that patients that can be managed by general dentists continue to receive dental care in the general dental practice. However, to ensure continuity of care, it is important that dentists understand where and how to refer patients to specialists in SND, and plan ongoing dental care after referred services.

Greg graduated from University of Queenslands (UQ) School of Dentistry, after a number of years successfully owning and operating his private practice, he sought the academic challenges of further higher education. In 1997, he completed his Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry at the University of Sydney (USyd) in pain control and conscious sedation and in 2001, completed his Masters of Science in Dentistry (USyd) where his thesis examined the association of workplace performance and toothache. This, led to his PhD (UQ) centred on risk management of putative risk factors associated with unscheduled dental visits. Greg is also a Fellow of the Academies of Dentistry International and Perrier Fauchard.
Greg has held a number of academic positions with the University of Queensland and Sydney. He has been president of the Australian Society of Dental Anaesthesiology (2009-2021) and the Australasian Military Medicine Association (2009-18). Furthermore, he is/has been a consultant to the Australian Defence Force and the Australian Dental Association on sedation and pain control. Following tooth extraction, the natural healing process invariably results in loss of alveolar ridge height and width. Up to half of the ridge width can be lost following the first 12 months of extraction. Such significant loss can compromise future management of the defect. The use of appropriate biomaterials at the time of extraction can effectively compensate for much of this bone loss. Preserving the ridge dimensions will help simplify future treatments. All general dentists performing extractions must be aware of the benefits of ridge preservation and have the ability to present this information to their patients prior to extraction.

Professor Laurence Walsh AO is a specialist in special needs dentistry who is based at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, where he is an emeritus professor, having retired from UQ in 2020. Laurie has been teaching infection control and clinical microbiology for over 25 years at postgraduate level and was chief examiner in microbiology for the RACDS from 1999-2020.
Laurie has been a member of the ADA Infection Control Committee since 1998, and has been re-appointed as its chair for 2021, having previously served as chair from 2009-2014. He has contributed to various protocols, guidelines and checklists and manuals used in Australia.
He has presented invited courses and lectures on infection control across Australia and internationally. Laurie has written over 60 articles on infection control and in addition published over 200 journal papers on clinical microbiology. He currently serves on three committees of Standards Australia (personal protective equipment; and instrument reprocessing) and in recent years has been an adviser to the Communicable Diseases Network of Australia and the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care.

Beginners Guide to Inhouse Milling
Digital dentistry is part of everyday practice in most dental practices but there was very little of this covered during your time at university.
Even the analogue dental impressions received at the laboratory are scanned in-house with the technician using design software to create the crown, bridge or inlay/onlay. Laser Radiation Safety and Compliance to State Regulations
Meeting the legislative requirements (licensing, procedures, and compliance) for a laser radiation practice can be daunting, not to mention a frustrating process. There aren't clear ‘road signs’ or directions to help guide what to do. Indeed, one can waste substantial time understanding these legal requirements, let alone applying them to practice. Of course, you still require plenty of time and energy to run your business/practice.
All practices with a laser machine must comply with the relevant local radiation health regulatory requirements for radiation safety. The core purpose is to ensure the safety of everyone, not only for the people operating the laser machine but also for people within proximity of the laser machine/exposure. As you know, laser radiation energy can be invisible with significant impact on health and wellbeing if not used correctly.
Each state and territory of Australia have their radiation safety guidelines and requirements. They differ both in applications and implications.
• It is crucial to follow all the correct procedures and processes for your radiation practice before operating laser machines. If you operate laser practices across Australia, be mindful of the different sets of legal requirements and compliance processes that you must adhere too.

How Do We Ever Know the Side Effects of Drugs?
All drugs have the potential for side effects. Some drugs cause many side effects and others hardly any. Most of us assume that drugs have been subjected some sort of testing before they are marketed, but this does not always happen.
Clinical trials can elucidate common and predictable adverse effects, but inherent weaknesses in clinical trial design limit what they can tell us. Such limitations include a small number of trial participants, that trial subjects are often different from the drug’s target users and that groups such as children, the elderly, women of childbearing age, are excluded from clinical trials.
Old drugs in use today, such as sedating antihistamines, may have never been subjected to clinical trials. Over-the-counter products and herbal remedies are not required to undergo clinical trials at all before marketing. So how do we ever know the side effects of drugs? And how do we know these drugs are safe? The answer is Pharmacovigilance, which will be explained in this presentation, as well as the role dentists play in this important endeavour.

The end is nigh…or is it? … Reinforcing and restoring cracked and compromised teeth (GC supported)
Cracked teeth are unfortunately a common concern in dental practice, and management of the various types of cracks can present significant challenges for the clinician. The use of complex indirect restorations can provide a viable solution in some cases, but the status and strength of the underlying tooth structure are often questionable. Long-term outcomes are often unpredictable and ultimately catastrophic failure may occur with subsequent loss of the tooth. Alternative options for restorative management are available using newer formulations of short fibre reinforced composite (SFRC) materials, which have been shown to be very successful in strengthening tooth structure, reducing crack propagation, and increasing the overall fracture toughness of teeth. Restorative techniques can be utilised to strengthen and restore both vital and endodontically treated teeth, and these can be used alone or in combination with an overlying direct or indirect restoration. This presentation will look at the various presenting situations involving cracked and compromised teeth and discuss strategies for managing and improving the successful outcome of restorative treatments.

Greg graduated from University of Queenslands (UQ) School of Dentistry, after a number of years successfully owning and operating his private practice, he sought the academic challenges of further higher education. In 1997, he completed his Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry at the University of Sydney (USyd) in pain control and conscious sedation and in 2001, completed his Masters of Science in Dentistry (USyd) where his thesis examined the association of workplace performance and toothache. This, led to his PhD (UQ) centred on risk management of putative risk factors associated with unscheduled dental visits. Greg is also a Fellow of the Academies of Dentistry International and Perrier Fauchard.
Greg has held a number of academic positions with the University of Queensland and Sydney. A thorough orthodontic examination often involves a careful and complex examination of the extraoral and intraoral soft and hard tissues. The periodontium acts as the medium through which tooth movement is facilitated, whereby, bone and tissue resorption occur on one side and opposition occurs on the other side of the dental unit. Dr Kamel will discuss the key periodontal elements that may influence orthodontic treatment plan decisions. These include assessment of patients’ periodontal health, tissue phenotype, frenal attachments, pre-existing soft tissue deficiencies, and the presence of impacted or missing tooth units. She will deliberate on the various interventional and treatment options utilised to manage these conditions prior to, during and after the completion of orthodontic care. Professor Laurence Walsh AO is a specialist in special needs dentistry who is based at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, where he is an emeritus professor, having retired from UQ in 2020. Laurie has been teaching infection control and clinical microbiology for over 25 years at postgraduate level and was chief examiner in microbiology for the RACDS from 1999-2020.
Laurie has been a member of the ADA Infection Control Committee since 1998, and has been re-appointed as its chair for 2021, having previously served as chair from 2009-2014. He has contributed to various protocols, guidelines and checklists and manuals used in Australia.
He has presented invited courses and lectures on infection control across Australia and internationally. Laurie has written over 60 articles on infection control and in addition published over 200 journal papers on clinical microbiology. He currently serves on three committees of Standards Australia (personal protective equipment; and instrument reprocessing) and in recent years has been an adviser to the Communicable Diseases Network of Australia and the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care.

Rebecca has a background in Law and a Master’s in Public Administration. She has been with the TGA for 12 years, where her work has included managing the Medical Devices Information Unit and the Devices Secretariat.
Rebecca is passionate about the development of strategic solutions and resources for both internal and external stakeholders to improve day-to-day business at the TGA. She has utilised her skills to draft legislative instruments, develop associated guidance to make regulatory requirements understandable and accessible for stakeholders, and worked with staff within the TGA to develop sound structures to streamline processes and improve service delivery. In 2016, Rebecca’s commitment to stakeholder engagement was recognised with the Department of Health’s Australia Day Award for Service.
Rebecca’s team includes staff with backgrounds in biomechanical engineering and allied health. Rebecca Bateson is an Acting Director in the Devices Emerging Technology and Diagnostics Section, currently serving as the project lead responsible for the introduction of the suite of reforms known as the personalised medical devices framework. Rebecca has a background in Law and a Master’s in Public Administration. She has been with the TGA for 12 years, where her work has included managing the Medical Devices Information Unit and the Devices Secretariat.
Rebecca is passionate about the development of strategic solutions and resources for both internal and external stakeholders to improve day-to-day business at the TGA. She has utilised her skills to draft legislative instruments, develop associated guidance to make regulatory requirements understandable and accessible for stakeholders, and worked with staff within the TGA to develop sound structures to streamline processes and improve service delivery. In 2016, Rebecca’s commitment to stakeholder engagement was recognised with the Department of Health’s Australia Day Award for Service.
Rebecca’s team includes staff with backgrounds in biomechanical engineering and allied health. Together the personalised medical devices team are working to contact over 10,000 individually impacted stakeholders to bring the regulatory requirements of the personalised medical devices framework to their attention and assist them with achieving compliance with their obligations. The team are also members of the International Medical Device Regulator’s Forum’s Personalized Medical Devices Working group, developing guidance that can be used to harmonise the requirements for personalised medical devices with jurisdictions around the world.
